Summary: It's in the title...
Note: This is meant to be an amusing possibility and not taken seriously. I don't find it probable, just funny and kind of a sweet thought that I haven't really heard bandied about.
Dumbledore watched Harry leave his office, sighing deeply.
The boy had asked, almost demanded an answer.
What could he say?
He had told him what he could; Snape felt remorse over his parents' death.
He did. He knew he did.
After all, how many nights had he held Severus in his arms after nightmares, after sweat-drenched anxiety attacks? How many nights had Severus wept because he'd been too late, because he felt he'd been too slow to reach Godric's Hollow? How much did he blame himself, because he'd been unable to impress upon Lily how much danger she was in, and Harry?
It always came to Harry. Who looked so like his father, but was so like his mother. He wondered if Harry would ever realize Snape did not hate him, but in fact, envied him. Harry had what Severus never knew -- parents who loved him unconditionally. Even now he had what Severus had never experienced in his years at Hogwarts -- real friends, camaraderie, adventures.
Worse, now, Harry had the great good fortune to be able to be open in his newfound relationship with the Weasley girl. They could hold hands, lean against each other in public, even kiss and no one would say it was wrong or improper or indecent or unnatural.
Severus would never begrudge Harry, Albus knew, but it still galled. He and Severus had shared so much between them that only they would ever know about.
The headmaster sighed now, tired to his marrow, thinking that if he died, no one but Severus would ever know the truth. Still, at least he would have the comfort of knowing that one person in the whole universe truly knew and understood him. Loved him. Needed him. For no other reason than because he existed.
Albus comforted himself now with the knowledge that the ritual had been successful, even though it had taken him months to convince his dark lover to agree to undertake it. Now, when his death came, his spirit would merge with Severus', his beloved.
This way, he could help keep Severus safe amongst the Deatheaters, adding his powers to his lover's.
This way, they would always be together.
Completed 25 July 2005.
